Selene Explorer 62-19 Delivered

Hull 6219 is a unique presentation of the Selene 62 Ocean Explorer. She is the result of a joint project between Jet Tern Marine, the European owner, Guido de Groot and consultancy firm, Kismet Services LLC. The owner wanted the boat to follow the new Ocean Explorer design principles but he decided on a number of changes. For this reason, he turned his eye to the interior layout, exterior styling and technical equipment. With a background in marine software, he is a very knowledgeable guy! Together with Ed (from Kismet Services) – they came up with some brand new ideas to challenge Guido and Jet Tern.

Selene 62-19 has a modern Light Oak interior

The interior of 6219 is very modern – for example, she is open plan using light oak wood facings for a completely new look. The saloon and galley are integrated and open and as a result there is an exceptional socialising area. The well equipped galley includes a breakfast island – never before seen on a Selene Yacht. Continuing forwards. the pilot-house has black laminate facing panels. Together with the red lighting, this is a well thought out design for night passages on the ocean.

On the lower decks, the layout follows more to the original, with three cabins and two bathrooms. Guests can access the cabins by means of the forward staircase. Using the aft staircase, the technical engine room area and crew cabin is separate from the guest areas.

Flybridge and Exterior of Selene 62-19

Notably, the team came up with some major changes on the flybridge and the exterior areas. One of the biggest was a fully enclosed flybridge with glass opening windows. As a result, this design offers a fully enclosed room with ventilation possibilities. In addition, the cockpit staircase was redesigned to be straight and easier to navigate. Finally, the signature “dancing poles” on the stern of the yacht are curved to follow the curved lines of the topsides.

On the forward deck, a proper U-shape sofa area replaces the usual small settee. An added table creates an additional relaxation area without compromising the deck space.

Engine Room and Machinery

In the engine room, Selene 6219 is equipped with twin John Deere 6135SFM engines which have been down-rated to M3. There are two Northern Lights generators and an ABT Trac hydraulic system, including thrusters and stabilisation. This boat will mainly be cruising in the tropics, so the design took into account the problem of high levels of algae in the warm waters. The owner specified a new design of electro sea-strainers which prevent fouling of the seacocks and strainers with the help of injected chlorine. Selene 6219 boasts the usual array of equipment including Reverso oil change pumps, fuel polishing system and water maker.

In the aft section, 6219 has accommodation for crew and her technical area and electrical room. Access to this area is from inside the saloon – a change from the normal design of the Selene 62. The usual transom gate exits out onto the swim platform. The electrical room hosts the Victron electrical system and Winston lithium battery banks.

Delivery to Hong Kong

Jet Tern delivered Selene 6219 by tug direct from the shipyard to the owner in Hong Kong. She is the second yacht they have delivered as a direct sale and the everything went smoothly. With the help of the Kismet Services delivery checklist, the owner could complete all the formalities easily at the border. He carried out some further sea trials and commissioning in Hong Kong, before setting out on the maiden voyage.

The passage took him first to Subic Bay, in the Philippines and then across to Malaysia and Kota Kinabalu. From there, he continued to Singapore where he stayed for a few weeks at his home. After a short rest, the yacht continued again to Langkawe and finally Phuket in Thailand. Interestingly, Howard Chen (Jet Tern CEO) was onboard for the leg from Hong Kong to the Philippines. This was a rare opportunity for him to see first hand a Selene Yacht on passage.

This brand new Selene 62 Ocean Explorer is now at home in her marina in Phuket. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the owner to build his perfect boat, he will not be able to enjoy it. Health problems and family commitments elsewhere in the world mean he has now decided to put her tentatively up for sale. As a result, this is a rare opportunity to acquire an exclusive brand new boat with nothing more than delivery and shakedown mileage.
